We just held the groundbreaking ceremony for our newest Evergreen Cooperative, the Green City Growers Cooperative. It will be a 3.8 acre hydroponic greenhouse in the Central neighborhood of Cleveland’s east side. It will grow over 5 million heads of lettuce and other leafy green vegetables a year along with 300,000 lbs. of herbs.
The future site of the greenhouse doesn’t look like much yet, but it’s going to be a beautiful facility with a large processing and packaging center in addition to the 3.8 acres of growing space. The site itself is just about 10 acres, which was very hard to find in the heart of Cleveland. It will be an exciting addition to the existing Evergreen Cooperatives and a tremendous addition to the thriving local food movement here in the city, as our greenhouse will only sell its produce within a 150 mile radius.
Check back with us for updates on the building of the greenhouse too. We will be posting lots of details on its progress.
